About Us

Our Story

The roots of IGNITE Fitness Holdings trace back to Joseph Pepe Sr., an influential leader in the fitness industry for over 45 years. Joe opened his first health club in the early 1980’s and in 2003, he became one of the first Planet Fitness franchisees by converting his 4 gyms in Connecticut to Planet Fitness clubs — with the Norwalk, CT location marking the 8th location in the Planet Fitness franchise’s history.

Over time, the company expanded its footprint to 15 Planet Fitness locations across Connecticut. In 2012, a majority stake in the business was sold to Exaltare Capital Partners (ECP), fueling growth that increased the company’s store count to over 100 locations. The company was acquired by TowerBrook Capital Partners in 2021, a private equity firm based in New York and London, where it became a key portfolio entity.

Under the TowerBrook ownership, IGNITE has grown into one of the largest franchise ownership groups within the brand, recognized not only for its impressive operational scale but also for its strong commitment to community engagement—fully aligned with Planet Fitness’s mission to provide a welcoming fitness experience for all.

Today, headquartered in Milford, Connecticut, IGNITE Fitness Holdings owns and operates over 140
Planet Fitness clubs across the United States—including Connecticut, New York, Tennessee, Georgia, New Mexico, and Arizona, well as in Canadian provinces British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

Chief Executive Officer

Joseph Pepe

I’m driven by a passion for health and wellness and the belief that fitness should be accessible to everyone. At Planet Fitness, that means helping break down barriers—whether financial, physical, or emotional—so more people feel comfortable getting started and staying consistent. I care deeply about creating environments where people can improve their lives, build confidence, and feel part of a community. My focus is on leading teams that deliver on that mission every day and having a meaningful, positive impact in the communities we serve. Outside of work, I’m fueled by time with my family and staying active—whether that’s coaching my kids’ flag football teams or getting in a workout. I enjoy traveling, reading, a good documentary, and playing golf. I also enjoy following sports and finding small ways to stay competitive. A standout milestone with Planet Fitness for me was helping lead the business past 100 locations—a moment that reflected years of disciplined execution, strong team leadership, and consistent growth. I’m not only proud of the scale, but how the team showed up to deliver it—seeing people across the org ascend into leadership positions, while maintaining strong unit economics and expanding access to affordable fitness across more communities.

Senior Vice President, Human Capital

Laurie Malec

I've spent more than 25 years in Human Capital, and from my very first role in HR, one belief has guided everything I do and has proven right time after time, when you truly invest in people, everything else tends to follow because you're investing in the future of your organization. Over nine years with IGNITE, I've had the privilege of being part of meaningful change from evolving how we develop our people to helping strengthen the kind of culture where someone can walk in the door, find their footing, and genuinely feel they belong and can grow here. That kind of culture doesn't happen by accident. It takes intention, consistency, and a deep commitment to putting people at the center of every decision. I show up every day knowing that the work we do in Human Capital has a direct impact on real people's lives and careers. That responsibility is something I don't take lightly, and it's exactly what drives me. Outside of work, I'm most likely to be found on a sideline somewhere, cheering, coaching from the stands, and probably embarrassing my kids in the best possible way. Family is everything to me, and being present for those moments is something I protect fiercely. Working for a gym, I try to stay on brand and fitness has always been important to me. But between work, four kids, and more pets than I'd like to admit, staying active isn't exactly a choice. I'm in constant motion. I've come to think of myself like a shark, the second I stop moving, I'm asleep. And when I do manage to slow down, you'll find me curled up under a blanket, either reading or doom scrolling...life is a balance, after all. If I had to point to one milestone that I'm most proud of since I've been at IGNITE, it would be the creation of our Equity Linked Incentive Program (or ELIP). Championing that program, working through the complexity of building something that didn't exist before, and ultimately seeing it come to life for eligible team members is something I don't take for granted. It's one of those moments where Human Capital gets to be more than a function, it gets to be a statement about what a company actually believes.

Vice President of Accounting & Controller

William McCullough, CPA

I’ve always shared the mindset that accounting can be influential in shaping the behavior of an organization. The data must be reliable, timely and accurate, but I’ve spent the majority of my career going beyond just the numbers. I’ve remained passionate throughout my career to redefine what it means to be a CPA. I strive to repeatedly unlock value through collaborating with department leaders to influence people, process and systems. Equipping stakeholders with the best information possible will remain a critical competitive advantage that sets this IFH team apart. Outside of work, I dedicate most of my time towards my family and friends. My wife and I started a business roughly 10 years ago for her to board, train and compete horses. We should all be so lucky to do what we are passionate about for a living! Becoming a father has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life, bringing with it new priorities (and the right ones!). I also enjoy traveling and staying as active as able, whether that is getting in a gym session or hitting the course for 18 holes.

Senior Vice President of Field Operations

Mike Shapiro

I began my Planet Fitness career at the front desk in 2008. The week I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in Economics, I moved into club management, and I’ve been fortunate to continue growing alongside the company ever since. Over the past 18 years, it has been incredibly rewarding to witness the growth and evolution of the Planet Fitness brand, while seeing so many people within our organization receive opportunities to build meaningful careers. What motivates me most is knowing that the work our teams do creates welcoming environments where the millions of people who have walked through our club doors over the years have had the opportunity to improve their health and positively change their lives. Spending time with my family is what fuels me most. Outside of work, I enjoy fishing and cooking, especially experimenting with new recipes and techniques in the kitchen. I consider my biggest accomplishment is growing alongside the company, from working at the front desk beginning in my first week of college, to entering management the week I graduated, and ultimately becoming Senior Vice President of Field Operations. I’m especially proud that my own career journey reflects the same opportunities for growth that we continue to create for people throughout our organization.
